Biography

Dr. Phillips' research program is aimed at the development and efficient implementation of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms. The work ranges over algorithm development, analysis, efficient implementation, and architectural development His latest research interests include:

  • On-line stabilization of block diagonal recurrent neural networks;
  • Comparing audio compression using wavelets with other audio compression schemes;
  • Detection of acoustic subword boundaries for single digit recognition
  • Development of random field simulation computer codes.

Dr. Phillips uses various techniques to give students a sound understanding of the underlying principles and the practical aspects of networks. For example, he implements FreeBSD based systems to construct real networks – a great way to create an understanding of the implementation details as well as the operational and troubleshooting aspects of networks. He also uses real-time tracking of the fast start algorithm in TCP/IP helps students acquire a firm grasp of the underlying principles.
